GALESBURG — GALESBURG (GHNS) — Illinois State Police investigators came to the Galesburg area last week in the search for the fourth wife of former Chicago-area policeman Drew Peterson.

Illinois State Police Master Sgt. Tom Burek said investigators were following on a lead that brought them to Knox County.

Peterson is facing murder charges in the death of his third wife, Kathleen Savio. No one has been charged in the disappearance of his fourth wife, Stacy Peterson, and no body has been found. Stacy Peterson was 23 when she disappeared.

Asked if investigators were in the area to look for Stacy Peterson's body, Burek said he would not go so far as to say they were searching for her body. As for being in the area last week, 'that would be correct, from the standpoint that we were searching.'

Burek declined to pinpoint the location searched, but said, 'we were in, I don't know if you want to call it rural Knox County, but we were very close to Galesburg.'
The search here yielded no results.

This is not the first time the search has brought investigators to central Illinois this summer. In early June, investigators searched a rural location near Peoria. At that time, the Peoria County coroner verified that there was a search under way for human remains but did not confirm the search was related to Peterson. State police confirmed at that time they were following a lead having to do with Stacy Peterson's disappearance.

Drew Peterson has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder in the death of Savio. He remains held in the Will County Jail on $20 million bond.

Investigators have also followed up on a number of leads in the Chicago area into the disappearance of Stacy Peterson, including sending divers into muddy waters not far from the couple's home. He remains the only suspect in the death of his fourth wife. She disappeared in 2007, shortly after telling Peterson she wanted a divorce.
